The garden is officially done, even though oddly we’ve been experiencing rather warm temperatures this past week. But with several weeks of cold temperatures at night, frost, and even SNOW there was nothing we could do to extend the season.

Sadly I ripped out my last tomato plant last week and started the process of planting garlic. That’s always the last thing we do before winter, that and clean the chicken coop of course before it gets too cold. The chickens are molting so the coop is a mess and filled with feathers.

It was a project we had to put on the back burner for a while. Our wood planters have been in rough shape for a while and were starting to crumble and upheave in areas, which made it hard to keep the critters out. I can’t wait to share more about this project in the coming months ð.

Growing up I don’t recall eating brussels sprouts. Maybe only the kind found in a frozen stir-fry mix. I never knew how delicious brussels sprouts could actually be until I started ordering them at restaurants.

Years ago we tried growing Brussels Sprouts but unfortunately, they didn’t end up growing very big. I really enjoyed seeing how they grew. If you didn’t know, brussels sprouts form as buds along the main stem of the plant. They love sun which is something my garden bed was lacking. I would love to try growing them again in a sunnier location!

First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Next, you’ll need to prep your Brussels Sprouts. They can be tedious. You’ll want to wash them first. Just dump them in a strainer and rinse them. Next grab a cutting board, knife, and 2 bowls. You will need to cut off the base of the stem. Then peel off the first layer of leaves. Some may have more blemishes than others. If so, just take off more leaves or cut the icky part off. You can choose to cut your Brussels sprouts in half or leave them whole. I’ve cooked them both ways and they are still delicious!

Now that your Brussels Sprouts are prepped you’ll need to grab a sheet pan, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Dump the brussels sprouts on the sheet pan, and drizzle them with olive oil. Make sure you’ve added enough. If you don’t add enough olive oil they will become dry. Toss them around to insure they are all coated with olive oil. Next spread them out evenly and sprinkle them with salt and pepper. Now they are ready for the oven.

At the time I was cooking a buttercup squash and some herb-roasted potatoes. Check out these recipes on my Youtube Channel.
