Homemade pizza recipe

Have you been wanting to make your own homemade pizza?

I’ll show you an easy way to make your very own homemade pizzas. This pizza recipe is an easy one. All you need to remember is… if you want pizza for dinner, you need to make the dough before lunch.

It’s really quite simple but there are a few kitchen tools that will make this process even simpler. I’ll explain below…

Homemade pizza

When we got married long ago, my husband’s parents gave us a KitchenAid mixer for our wedding gift, along with other kitchen treasures. At first, we didn’t use our mixer much, maybe for some cookies. As time went on it’s truly been a staple in our kitchen.

Pizza dough is something I’m always making. I couldn’t live without my KitchenAid mixer. Plus using it reminds me of my mother-in-law, who we sadly lost to Alzheimer’s. This mixer is one of those things I would love to pass down to my children.

While my husband and I were in high school (Yes, I’ve known him that long) He worked at a pizza shop. I think that’s where we both got our love for making pizzas. It’s always been his specialty, among many things. Over the years we’ve had fun making and perfecting our pizza making.

If you’re curious about the recipe, my husband stumbled across it over a decade ago. It’s what we’ve always used. If it’s in his handwritten book it’s a keeper. I guess we feel like why change something that’s good? Give it a try. It just might be your new go-to pizza recipe.

If you have a favorite dough recipe, please share it in the comments below, I would love to hear from you. I’m open to trying anything new.

Homemade Pizza Dough Recipe

Ingredients for the dough:

  • 1 1/2 cups of warm water
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour

How to make your dough:

In a stand mixer bowl, add your warm water, yeast, and brown sugar. Mix together and let it sit for 10 mins. (The warm water and sugar will make the yeast come alive).

Next add your olive oil, salt, and flour. Turn the mixer on low (make sure you’re using your dough hook attachment). Keep on low until your flour is mixed in. Then turn it up to medium speed for 5-7 mins. Or longer if it’s too sticky.

Flour your hands to take the dough out of the bowl and add a little olive oil to the bottom. Form your dough ball and place it back in the mixing bowl.

Cover with plastic wrap and place on the counter to allow for the dough to rise. If you want pizza the same day allow 4-5 hours for it to rise. I usually make it in the morning or before lunch if I want pizza for dinner.

This pizza dough recipe should make roughly 3 medium-sized pizzas, or 2 large and 1 personal-sized pizza. That’s what we do at our house. My daughter loves pizza but she prefers pizza with no cheese.

Ingredients for the sauce:

  • 1 can of San Marzano peeled tomatoes. My go-to brand is Cento
  • 2 cloves of garlic peeled and minced
  • Salt and pepper
  • Italian seasoning Or basil if it’s available

Making your sauce:

Start with a bowl, open your can of tomatoes and pull out each tomato, and hand crush each one into the bowl. Then add your minced garlic, salt and pepper, and Italian seasoning. Season to your liking. And there you go. Your sauce is ready.

Preheat your oven to 450-500 degrees

When your dough is ready. Start with a clean dry surface. Before you get started, make sure you sprinkle some flour on your work surface.

Punch your dough and then pull it out of the bowl. Next, you’ll want to divide it into 3 equal pieces (or 2 large and 1 small) whatever works best for your family.

Before you begin rolling out your dough make sure your work surface is floured. Use your rolling pin and start by rolling it out to form a circle. Flip it and continue to roll it out until it matches your desired size or shape. Just make sure you don’t roll it out too thin.

Once your pizza dough is rolled out and ready grab your pizza peel and sprinkle on some flour. This is another kitchen item I couldn’t live without!!

Before you add your ingredients, make sure everything is ready to go. Make sure your oven is preheated to 450 degrees, your sauce is made and your topping are prepped.

Now place your rolled-out pizza dough onto your floured pizza peel and add your sauce and pizza ingredients. Then place it on your pizza stone by using a back-and-forth motion with your pizza peel (it took me a while to learn this) then cook for 10 mins or less. Just pay attention so the bottom doesn’t burn.

Give yourself a pat on the back. You just made yourself some homemade pizza!!

I hope your family enjoys it, just as much as mine.
